Sotheby’s unveils the highlights of its upcoming “Impressionist & Modern Art” auction [28 Mar 2005]

Like its competitor Christie’s, Sotheby’s holds its biggest sale every year in early May. The prestigious “Impressionist and Modern Art” evening sale will take place on 3 May 2005 in New York. The same thematic auction last year, which included 34 works from the Whitney Collection, proved a huge success and generated USD 190 million in turnover.

Art Market Alert III [08 Oct 2003]

Finding a niche in a declining market.

Collectors are being bombarded with offers aimed at reviving the current sluggish market. But the figures tell a different story. The buy-in ratio over the last six months has averaged 37% and auction houses are increasingly struggling to fill their catalogues. By 23 September, only 185 fine art sales had been announced for October 2003 compared to 263 a year earlier.

After the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Tate Modern in London, it is MoMA’s turn to welcome the Beckmann retrospective from 26 June 2003. Beckmann is renowned in the auction world as the holder of the world record price for a German painting.

Star turns at the Impressionism & Modern Art auctions in New York [16 Apr 2003]

Sotheby’s and Christie’s are taking similar approaches to the evening auctions to be held on 6 and 7 May.
