Comments: J.W. Barber served his apprenticeship under Abner Reed, engraver of East Windsor. He established his own engraving business in New Haven in 1823, but soon was devoting himself to history. He traveled widely over the Eastern United States, gathering historical information for the many books he published and for the hundreds of engravings with which he embellished them.
