Comments: Born at Drayton Hall," near Charleston (SC), he was a prominent legislator and jurist and served two terms as governor of South Carolina. He also authored several books, including Letters Written during a Tour through the Northern and Eastern States of America (1794); a translation of Thomas Walter's Flora Caroliniana (1798); and A View of South Carolina, as Respects Her Natural and Civil Concerns (1802). The manuscripts of the last two, with watercolor illustrations by Drayton, are owned by the Charleston Library Society.
