biography of Cadwalader RINGGOLD (1802-1867)

Profession: Topographical draftsman, cartographer

Comments: Entered the U.S. Navy as a midshipman in 1819, retired in 1864 as a commodore, and was made a rear-admiral, retired, the year before his death. In 1849-50, as Commander Ringgold, he commanded a surveying expedition to the California coast. A sketch of the entrance to San Francisco Bay, made at this time, appeared in his report, titled Series of Charts, with Sailing Directions ... (1852). He was declared insane in 1854 and went to China to recover. He retired as a Commodore in 1864.
