biography of C. J. DYER (XIX)

Profession: Lithographer

Work: Henry E. Huntington Library, San Marino, CA (impression of Novato Ranch view)

Comments: Little is known about this artist, who in 1880 produced a lithograph of Napa, and Novato Ranch, CA. He drew city views of Phoenix and Prescott, AZ in 1885, published by the Schmidt Label & Litho Co. of San Francisco. These prints are extremely rare and attractive, according to Reps. In the Phoenix print the view of the entire city is surrounded by an oval border of trimmed saplings. It is believed that some of the credit for the design belongs to W. Byrnes who put Dyer's drawing on stone.
