Comments: Best-known for his portraits of Gen. Robert E. Lee. A son of Mayor Joseph Eaches of Alexandria (VA) and younger brother of James Eaches (see entry). Moved to Louisville in the 1850s and established a studio, remaining there until the outbreak of the Civil War when he returned to Alexandria and joined the Confederate Army. After being severely wounded in 1862, he retired from active service to become a government draftsman in Richmond. About 1870 he went to NYC, where he opened a studio.
