Comments: Came at age nine from Genoa to California where his uncle owned a vineyard. As a young man he worked as a barber and waiter, singing Italian opera at the Tivoli Opera House. His talents as a painter were discovered by Jules Tavernier (see entry). Favorite subjects: eucalyptus trees, sunlight on the marshes. Position: instr., Mills College, 1903-1917.
