Sales of photographs are attracting an ever-growing population of collectors and the rise in demand was reflected in last year’s auction prices with twelve 7-digit results, a general price index up 25% and an auction turnover ten times higher than 10 years ago.

The list of this summer’s photography exhibitions has three big names: Diane ARBUS at the National Museum in Cardiff until 31 August, Richard AVEDON with a retrospective at the International Center of Photography in New York until 6 September and Henri CARTIER-BRESSON, (who was born 100 years ago) at the European House of Photography in Paris (Henri Cartier-Bresson à vue d’œil) until 30 August.

The photojournalism market is booming. Turnover at auction has risen by more than 250% in 10 years, and the trend is strong in the USA, France and the UK.For many years photojournalism was considered a secondary form of art, much like scientific or ethnographic photography. Since the 1950s however it has become well established, partly thanks to World Press Photo, with its annual contest celebrating the year’s best journalistic photographs, and a number of exhibitions underlining the news photo’s dual role as documentary testimony and aesthetic artefact.

Edward STEICHEN, Cecil BEATON, Henri CARTIER-BRESSON, Robert CAPA, Raymond DEPARDON, Robert DOISNEAU, Walker EVANS, Dorothea LANGE, Marc RIBOUD are some of the biggest names in photojournalism, which for many years was considered a secondary form of art, much like scientific or ethnographic photography. Photojournalists bear witness to their time, using the camera to capture the real. Their photos have an important impact culturally as they become part of our collective memory, mainly through dissemination by the media.
Art market latest trends: resale lots [21 Nov 2004]
Following the latest New York sales, the Artprice Global Index of fine art, which uses repeated sales method, is up 18.2% on the year-ago period. USD 100 invested in an artwork ten years ago would now be worth an average of USD 153.Many art collectors are generating even higher returns through judicious deals at auction, making the most of the market’s current enthusiasm. To give an idea of some of the particularly lucrative transactions recently carried out, Artprice presents the following list of works that have come under the hammer at least twice:
Photojournalism given a rough ride at auction [27 Nov 2003]
Third time around must have been too much. This was the third year running that Thierry de Maigret had played host to collectors of photojournalism. His initial sale on 15 November 2001 was a first in the genre, and took EUR 250,000, with 124 lots finding buyers.
Henri CARTIER-BRESSON: photo-journalism gets its foot in the door of the auction world [06 Nov 2002]
Some of the great photojournalists were able to transform their pictures into works of art. One such pioneer was Henri Cartier Bresson founder of the Magnum Photos press agency. Today, documentary photography is capturing market share in public auctions. Photojournalism at Auction 2002 takes place at the Drouot Hotel on 15 November, in the middle of Paris’s Photography Month and the Paris Photo 2002 fair. 700 prints will be up for auction. But the first steps of documentary photography at auction have not been free of pitfalls.
