Cesar in the spotlight at the upcoming contemporary art auctions

[05 Dec 2004]

Twenty-three César (BALDACCINI César) works from the artist’s estate are to take centre stage at a major art auction organised by Artcurial-Briest-Poulain-Le Fur on 7 December 2004. The range of works on offer represents the largest collection of the artist’s works ever put up for auction.
The star lot is a 3-metre-high bronze (1965) entitled “Grande plaque à ailettes” estimated at EUR 120,000-150,000, and the auction will also feature expansions and compressions.

Base 1997 = EUR 100

Prices for Césars were stable between 1998 (the year of his death) and 2003 but have trended upwards in recent months. The Artprice index for the artist rose 44% between January and November 2004, a trend that should be confirmed at this auction.
In addition to César’s sculptures, the auction has a treat in store for collectors of Tom Wesselman, Antoni Tapies, Robert Combas and Jean Dubuffet.
