Art Fair Tokyo

Japan

ART FAIR TOKYO is the largest art fair in Japan and the oldest in Asia, featuring a wide range of art from antiques and crafts to nihonga painting, modern art and contemporary art.

The fair continues to evolve and expand as a platform for the art market, connecting past and present, Asia and the West, and presenting historically inspired artistic contexts.

HISTORY

ART FAIR TOKYO’s history goes back to Nippon International Contemporary Art Fair (NICAF), which started in 1992 at Pacifico Yokohama as the first major contemporary art fair in Asia. NICAF struggled in Japan’s then inhospitable economic climate and was held for the eighth and final time in 2003.

After NICAF disbanded, many wanted to re-launch the fair and set about analyzing the art market in Japan. They realized that what was needed was an art fair that featured not only contemporary art but also Japan’s unique heritage of antiques and crafts, and nihonga painting and modern art. The result was ART FAIR TOKYO.

Launched in 2005, the fair expanded its venue in 2012 and attracted over 50,000 visitors.

In 2015, the fair celebrated its tenth anniversary and also established Art Tokyo Association to organize the fair.
