The Holyoke Public Library Museum record (dated 1978) for The Cove reads that it was part of the original library art collection of 1928. It was gift of the Holyoke League of Arts and Crafts in 1927. Before that, it appears to have been the property of William A. Burnett of Amherst. The 1978 description ("green canoe lies overturned... broken down fence...  white cabin") describes damage: "Large areas of paint lifting from surface, especially in the lower half of the painting. Complete paint loss in center...." The description also reads: "Signed l.l.  Winslow Homer NA in black paint" The previous catalog number: "27.6 (or 6A).12" Catalog number in 1978:  "78.11"
