Observations

Walter Pichler is one of the most important visionary artists of the present time. His unique universe of drawings, sculptures, models, installations and architecture he composes from space, proportions, memories, light and especially time. The initial point of all his works is drawing. In combinations with his sculptures the drawings form a subtle narrative network.

Pichler was born in South Tyrol 1936. His diploma from the University of Applied Arts he received in 1955. Since the 1960ies Pichler spans his work between sculpture and architecture. Together with Hans Hollein and Raimund Abraham he developed the so called Visionary Architecture that was presented in the Museum of Modern Art in New York 1967. In this year Pichler also was invited to the Documenta in Kassel.

1982 Pichler represented Austria at the Venice Biennale and 1985 he was honoured with the ”Große Österreichische Staatspreis für Bildende Kunst”/Great Austrian State Prize for Visual Art in Vienna.
