Artwork description

A portrait of the praying Mary Magdalene in front of the crucified Christ is surrounded by a flower cartouche by the hand of Jan van Kessel the Elder.

Dr. Klaus Ertz dates the oil painting on copper, due to composition, painting style and appearance of cartridges, in the 1650s. As the grandson of Jan Brueghel the Elder (also called "Samtbrueghel" or "Blumenbrueghel") and nephew Jan Brueghel the Younger and David Teniers the Younger, Jan van Kessel the Elder was more under the influence of his grandfather and uncle than under his master Simon de Vos. He worked all his life with his famous ancestors, began his career in the field of flower painting and became one of the most brilliant flower painter of his century. He arranged tulips or mostly pink roses with meticulous sense of detail in bouquets.

The fine execution of his representations and his lively and strong colors make Jan van Kessel the Elder one of the most respected Flemish painters of his time.
