Artwork description

Pencil & charcoal signed G. Dubois de Bar Le Duc in the bottom right part.
Paul Dubois is the grand-nephew of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. After studying law, he was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Armand Toussaint's studio, then he went to Rome. He debuted at the Salon of 1860 exposing the Bust of the Countess of B. and a Child. He won a medal for his first two statues Saint John the Baptist and Narcissus Bath in 1863. Deeply influenced by Italy and the art of the Renaissance, he became a leader of so-called "Florentine" sculptors, emulated by their Quattrocento predecessors. The condition of the margins is average (band yellowed up on 3cm, creases) but the drawing can be framed without being visible
