This lithograph is hand signed in pencil by the artist “Max Ernst” at the lower right margin. It is also numbered from the edition of 220, at the lower left margin. It was printed by Desjobert, Paris and published by Guilde de la Gravure, Geneva-Paris in 1955. The paper bears the Marais watermark in the upper and lower margins. There is a blind stamp “Bolaffio” in the upper left corner. Another impression of this subject is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Note: This subject was later used as the cover for the Penguin Classic 1965 edition of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis and Other Stories.
Provenance: Fernand Mourlot (1895 – 1988) Fernand Mourlot was the director of Mourlot Studios and founder of Editions Mourlot. Nicole Bordas, daughter of Fernand.
