A realistic painting of the youth years, signed “ThT” for “Theodorus Toorop” or “ThJ” for “Theodorus Johannes”. Signature can be compared with the 1883 Seated lady Watercolor pencil 29x22,5cm Christies Amsterdam 17/11/2009 lot136. Provenance : French Burgundy private collection – Bordeaux private collection. In 1880 he became a student at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. From 1882 to 1886 he lived in Brussels where he joined Les XX (Les Vingts), a group of artists centred on James Ensor. Toorop worked in various styles during these years, such as Realism like here, Impressionism Neo-Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
