Observations

This original lithograph is hand signed and dated in pencil by the artist "HM Pechstein 1917" at the lower right margin. This impression is a unique hand-coloured proof inscribed “1. Probedruck” aside from the standard edition of 130 printed in black. The subject was published by Verlag Gurlitt, Berlin for inclusion in the portfolio “Paraphrasen zur Samländischen Ode” [The Samland Ode].Note: We have not found any other hand colored impression of this lithograph in public auction in the past 30 years.
Provenance: Dr. Ismar Littmann, Breslau (1878-1934). Dr. Littmann was a lawyer and a strong supporter of the arts and especially local contemporary artists associated with the Academy of Fine Art in Breslau. In the late 1910s, Dr. Littmann began collecting artworks predominately works on paper – watercolors, drawings, and prints.
