This aquatint is hand signed in black ink by the artist "Henri Matisse" at the lower right margin.It is also hand numbered in black ink, from the edition of 200 at the lower left margins.The work is also signed in the plate “Henri Matisse” in the image. It is inscribed “Gravee par Jacques Villon 1922” in the lower right platemark. After the First World War Jacques Villon engraved a series of Aquatints after paintings of the Modern masters, such as Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Derain, Laurencin, Signac, Renoir, Cezanne, Vlaminck, Bonnard, Manet, Dufy, Luce, Modigiliani, Van Gogh, and others. This particular work was etched and aquatinted on the plate by Jacques Villon after the specially prepared maquette by Matisse and with Matisse’s collaboration and supervision. The work was published by Galerie Bernheim Jeune, Paris in 1922.The paper bears the Arches watermark.This aquatint in based on a work painted by Matisse in 1921 titled “Au Bord de la Mer”, “La Terrasse”. |
