PETRUS JOHANNES SCHOTEL 1808 - 1865
Ships in Rough water
Brush with grey and brown wash
Over black chalk
65.8 x 97.0 cm

Provenance: Sotheby's Amsterdam, 14/11/2006

Typical of his compositions, the present drawing becomes an important addition to his graphic oeuvre as it is perhaps the largest drawing known by Petrus Johannes Schotel. The boats struggling in the rough sea, with the choppy, wind blown water and advancing storm clouds were a favorite theme of the Romantic period, for which Schotel was well known. Comparative marine drawings are in the Hans von Leeuwen Collection in Utrecht, in the Reitlinger Collection in London, and in the Earl of Warwick Collection.
