Observations

Ottawa born sculptor Dale Dunning has explored the image of the ‘human head’—a universal, gender-less face for most of his career. In this beautifully cast bronze piece, a narrowed face, its forehead coming to an arrow-like point, is reminiscent of ancient statuary. It stands as a ‘sentinel,’ as if it is watching or being watched. Fine, black lines running through the piece add detail to its prominent features. Dunning sees his pieces as “objects of reflection and contemplation.”

He holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. While earning his Bachelor of fine arts degree from Mt. Allison University, NB he studied under Lawren P. Harris, the son of one of the Group of Seven founders.
