Concarneau is a port on the southern Brittany coast and is today the third largest fishing port in France. It is also about 10km from Pont-Aven, where Ludovic-Rodo had visited and painted in the early 1900s, and it is likely that this painting was done while Rodo was visiting his brother, Georges Manzana, who was in Pont-Aven in 1928.

This painting shows the medieval Ville Close, a walled town on a long island in the centre of the harbour and its drawbridge which connects it to the modern town of Concarneau.
