Rudolf STINGEL (1956)

Rudolf Stingel was born in 1956 in South Tyrol. During a trip to New York in 1987, he was confronted with contemporary art that was more conceptual than that in Europe, which prompted him to make a series of reflections on the process of artistic creation.

In 1989, he published “Instructions”: a manual in several languages explaining step by step how to produce a painting identical to his own abstract canvases. The rest of his production is in the same vein: walls covered with celotex: an insulation material on which everyone can leave their mark, entire rooms filled with oriental rugs which distort the spatial perceptions of the visitor and abstractions with everyday household interior design textile patterns. He goes against the rules and included the public in the development of his works. Rudolf Stingel’s photorealistic paintings, some of which are based on images from other photographers, such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Sam Samore, form part of the same questions about the limits of the figurative and pictorial techniques.
