Comments: In March 1855 Charles E. Cridland, a young artist of much promise," arrived in Cleveland (Ohio) from Cincinnati. This was presumably the artist listed in Cincinnati directories in 1852-53 and in Cist (1851) as Edward Cridland. Later in 1855 C.E. Cridland appeared in the Chicago directory and exhibited at the Illinois State Fair (as C.E. Cridland of Chicago, and as J.C. Cridland of Cincinnati). Charles E. Cridland was back in Cincinnati by 1858 and worked there until after 1860.

Cridland, who exhibited chemical paintings of religious and historical subjects in Cincinnati in 1845, may have been a relative (Cincinnati Daily Gazette, Nov. 29, 1845, cited by J.E. Arrington).
