biography of Harry Arthur MCARDLE (1836-1908)

Comments: Came to America in 1847 and grew up in Maryland. During the Civil War he was at Richmond (VA) and designed gunboats. Later he was a topographer for Gen. Lee. After the war he settled at Independence (TX). He taught at Baylor Female College. An historical and military painter, he died in financial straits. Nineteen years after his death the state of Texas finally paid his heirs $25,000 for his major paintings, "Dawn at the Alamo" and "Battle of San Jacinto."
