biography of Walter ANDERSON (act.1856-1893)

Profession: Genre and landscape painter

Exhibited: NAD (1860); London (1867, 1870)

Comments: Active 1856-86. In 1854 he married the artist Sophie Gengembre (see entry for Sophe Gengembre Anderson), at Manchester (PA). The couple then went to England, where they lived until about 1871 at which time they moved to the Island of Capri. They appear to have made at least one visit to the United States, in 1860, when both exhibited at the National Academy as residents of Manchester (PA), which was the home of Sophie's parents. Anderson's birthplace is unknown, he has been included in British dictionaries but Groce & Wallace speculated that his home before his marriage may have been in or near Pittsburgh, or possibly Cincinnati.
