Comments: Associated with the Romantic and Realist movements in France, he was a friend of Victor Hugo and portraitist of the French royal family. In 1845 he and architect J.N.B. DePouilly made a sketch for a monument to Andrew Jackson for what is now Jackson Square. In 1846 he and Louis Dominique Grandjean Develle (see entry) traveled to the Rio Grande in order to make sketches of Gen. Zachary Taylor and the battle sites of the Mexican War. The huge battle picture (Battle of Resaca de la Palma") resulting from these efforts was shown with great ceremony in New Orleans in 1847 and 1849. Also known as Auguste de Chatillon.
