Comments: NÈ Karl Friederich Wilhelm Mielatz. Immigrated to the U.S. as a boy, and in 1883 he learned etching in Newport, RI, from James J. Calahan. Mielatz remained in Newport from 1884-87, earning a reputation for his etchings of Rhode Island, Block Island, and Nantucket. Around 1889, he began a series on NYC and gained recognition for his architectural subjects. He taught etching at the NAD, c.1904-19, and in his later works experimented with soft-ground etching, aquatint, and color inks.
