Comments: As a young painter he was a member of the "Gillespie Group," which was a loose collection of artists, including George Hetzel, Alfred S. Wall, Joseph R. Woodwell, David Gilmore Blythe and Jasper Lawman (see entries ). He was one of the first artists to discover Scalp Level, a small town, which became a favorite artists" place until the late 1890s.
