Comments: Modernist artist who made portraits and figural works in a bold vivid style. She was friendly with many of the avant-garde artistic types of the 1920s and 1930s, including Alexander (Sandy) Calder, George Luks, Betty Parsons, Fanny Brice, Harpo Marx, and Jane Bowles. Sargent stopped painting about 1935. Family relationships, alcohol problems, and mental illness complicated a great portion of her later life. Assembled important collection of modern art.
