Illustration for The Princesses wrote in 1874 by Théodore de Banville.
In 1875, the mother of Rochegrosse remarries with the poet Théodore de
Banville, of which Georges becomes the adopted son. Théodore Faullain de
Banville (1823–1891) was a French poet and writer who influenced the
Symbolist movement in French literature in the late 19th century. “The
Princesses” was wrote in 1874 and it seems that it came the idea to
Rochegrosse to illustrate it in the years 1904-1907. At the beginning of
his career, he practices history painting and tries to symbolize. Then
he turned to Orientalism when he discovered Algeria in 1894. An
influential member of the Society of French Orientalist Painters.
