Painter, Engraver, Illustrator member of the Romanticism Art Movement. Romantic scene with characters of a high quality & complexity. An answer to the critics reproaching his paintings for being enlarged illustrations.
Landscapes or Waterscapes thema is not current in Doré career but was used a couple of time in comparable sizes. Dore's illustrations were characterized by fine detail & technical mastery. Doré multiplies the points of view, in
diving, low-angle, panoramic plans or front end with a search for maximum image efficiency. Paradoxically, Gustave Doré approached his work of illustrator in the costume of a painter while his painting was constantly measured according to his talent as an illustrator. This judgment has terribly affected Gustave Doré, despairing of being recognized as a painter. Throughout his artistic career, Gustave Doré had an equal commitment in painting and illustration without seeing any incompatibility. Detailed note on request.
