Between 1939 to 1961 Dali worked on set and costume design along with a number of prominent artists working for companies such as the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and other ballet companies throughout the world. Dali created the stage decor, costumes, and libretto for the Ballets Russe de Monte Carlo's Venusberg with choreography by Massine and music by Richard Wagner. Dalí was intimately involved with set design for the 1949 ballet, “Sombrero de tres Picos” (also known as “The Three-Cornered Hat”) at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York. This painting is one of the studies Salvador Dali created prior to building the set. It is an important example of the prolific oeuvre of the artist and we are proud to have been a brief part of its history.
