Evasionidal sé, evasioni dall’altro, evasioni nell’arte

Frutto di creazione che è fatta di uno studio che dà vita, costruisce e poi, nell’atto artistico toglie, strappa, lacera, l’arte di Diana Kirova, nel titolo di una delle sue più recenti opere, “EVASIONI”, restituisce il senso più profondo della sua essenza, artistica e

personale. Questa corrispondenza duale (artista/individuo) definisce il suo essere artista attraverso le emozioni, concarnate nella pittura, che vogliono evadere: il desiderio di Libertà.

Facendo riferimento alla filosofia, il dizionario ci suggerisce questo concetto di “libertà”: “Capacità del soggetto di agire (o di non agire) senza costrizioni o impedimenti esterni, e di autodeterminarsi scegliendo autonomamente i fini e i mezzi atti a conseguirli.”

L’arte è libera, libera ne è (e deve essere) certamente la sua espressione, e questo Diana lo ha compreso e fatto suo nella più profonda interiorità. Il desiderio di libertà personale della pittrice è espresso infatti attraverso il medium artistico. Nel suo forte desiderio, negato, di fare arte, sgomitando nei percorsi della vita, la Kirova SCEGLIE in favore della pittura. La scelta è già, in nuce, un atto di libertà!

La sua non è una libertà personificata, che vuole guidare, ma è fortemente evocata. La sua evocazione è, in prima istanza, visibile nella scelta dei soggetti in un passaggio da i volatili, una evidenza immediata all’idea di libertà, alle barche a vela che ne sono metafora, e restituiscono un messaggio più sottile. Non è soltanto la barca a rappresentare la libertà, ma anche e soprattutto il viaggio che la barca compirà, un viaggio attraverso un cielo e un mare che, sulla sua tela, si fondono: cielo e mare evocano già (singolarmente) il senso più profondo dell’infinito, uniti insieme in uno sfondo neutro, sono sublimati.

Da una prima percezione, empiricamente attivata, ci si aspetterebbe una linea di orizzonte, la si anela automaticamente nella mente nella continua ricerca (squisitamente umana) di certezze acquisite: queste sono qui, come già hanno provato altri artisti non solo del secolo precedente, celate. Questo senso d’infinito, dato dalla mancanza, voluta, della linea di orizzonte, è però capace di restituire quel desiderio di libertà, quel viaggio nel raggiungimento della stessa in cui s’innesta la barca (che forse potrebbe chiamarsi proprio Diana?) che è, in questa fase, protagonista della pittura della Kirova, che accetta le sfide del contemporaneo, guardandosi dentro…

La ricerca della libertà è quindi lo stimolo interiore più forte dell’artista, nella sua personalissima tecnica che la contraddistingue: gli strappi, “ductus” pittorico che la caratterizza, concedono alla pittura di rappresentare solo ciò che “serve” a restituire il senso profondo dell’opera e allo stesso tempo mettono in evidenza come, nel viaggio della vita, siano proprio le lacerazioni a connaturare l’esistenza, qualcosa che ci è stato tolto ma che in realtà “funziona”, come ben fa nelle opere di Diana, per definire ciò che di più intrinseco c’è in ognuno di noi.

In tal senso peculiare è l’uso dei simboli: un significante pittorico capace di esprimere “attivamente” il significato. Qui l’artista non sceglie di togliere o di risparmiare ma di aggiungere. La simbologia nasce dall'esigenza di esprimere un’emozione senza dover per forza raccontare (pittoricamente): lo scopo della Kirova non è narrativo o descrittivo, bensì quello di “tirar fuori”, e il simbolo è evidenza che si fa sensibile attraverso il medium pittorico, là dove la tecnica si fa strumento per restituire un messaggio.

Se la figura umana partecipa alla pittura, la figurazione è spesso a risparmio, sottende una profondità espressa e, coinvolgendo lo spettatore, focalizza il significato dell'opera, il suo motivo per cui "esserci" come un’apparizione, etera, si fa portatrice muta di un sentimento: muta come l'arte è per sua natura, ma tanto eloquente come Diana sa essere attraverso la tela.

Quella della Kirova è una ricerca continua di spunti destinati a esprimere un sentimento interiore, che l’artista è capace di tradurre in immagine; anche quando la vita si fa soffocante, la fuga da questa porta Diana all’arte, a sublimare il suo desiderio

di libertà, concedendosi, attraverso lo studio, i colori, la personalissima tecnica e la dedizione estetica (finanche nella scelta

dei titoli), la sua dose di evasione.

In una vita in cui l’artista (e forse non solo lei) sente di non aver sempre potuto scegliere, l’arte le concede la possibilità, che lei accoglie con capacità, gusto e personalissimo stile, di scegliere. Sceglie la sua arte che “lascia intendere” ma che, interiormente,

desidera gridare la sua verità, la sua libertà.

Nella vita che non l’ha resa libera, l’arte “lo tenterà”.

Dramatic forms of ships and sails emerge as if flying from clearice blue backgrounds in Diana Kirova’s expressive works in paint. With the exclusion of any form of horizon in her paintings she creates a space without limits, where the never-ending expanse of sky merges with the depths of a deep aquamarine sea. There is a vivid sense of energy within the paintings, bursting forth like the crest of a wave.

Originally from Bulgaria, Kirova is now based in Rome. She has had a passion for painting since childhood, although her varied life has seen her having to cease her practice many times. In 2008 she returned to the canvas, and has exhibited regularly in Rome throughout the last nine years, with three solo shows this year.

THE MYTH OF THE CONTEMPORARY AND ICARUS '

Among the many myths of ancient Greece, the most remembered and quoted one is perhaps the story of Icarus, with wings constructed by his father Daedalus, who flew too close to the sun, so close that his wings melted and he fell and died. This myth owes its fame to one of the characters deeply innate to human nature: the desire for flight as a metaphor for freedom, but also ascent. To broaden their horizons and increase their knowledge, even if only in visual aspect humans stood on two legs and after that began dreaming of other forms of evolution: the wings to help them overcome the anchor to the ground and the gravity forces. As early as the Paleolitic times cave paintings in Europe depicted sometimes “man-bird” and thiey clearly demonstrate how man has always longed to reach a new dimension of being “on the ground” and “in the sky”. The mysticism, the faith and the various religions confirm the idealization flight by men.. To confer divinity, one imagines that a superior being first amd foremost has the ability to fly, overcomes the gravity and often its physical structure is a union between a human body and that of a bird, like the body of an angel.

If we envy a feature that is clearly precluded for the birds, which are unique in the animal world, if this same feature for us is a quality and characteristic of the divine world, and if our purpose in life is to really achieve a spirituality so high as to merit our ascent to a heavenly dimension to live in heaven, we understand now that the figure of the bird is the link between the sacred and the profane in human mind.

Who wears the wings of a dove reaching the ark of Noah or of an archangel Gabriel who announces the coming of Christ, is the intermediary between God and men.

What this introduction aims to underline is the highly symbolic character that even a single bird can awaken in our mind, especially if we talkabout art, we usually always look for the concealed meaning of references and archetypal codes. If the figure is then completelyimmersed in a neutral background, as is the case of Diana Kirova, is even clearer that what you are talking about is not a representation,but a projection. The projection that the artist does in his paintings is equal and opposite force to the humanization of animalsthat can be found in the fables of Phaedrus as well as in those of La Fontaine. If in fairy tales for children - and adults - the animalbehaves like man and acquires particularities of earthly scenes to create fun and paradox, Diana Kirova represents the birds and toidentify herself with them, feels like a bird, and absorbs the spiritual character models to overcome emotional conflicts andpractice that the human condition requires. In this sense, the portraits of monochromatic neutral backgrounds and sometimes with avariety of birds, are actually self-portraits, strong role-playing games in which the artist becomes a character in Ovid's Metamorphosesand, ideally, acquires a form capable to get up from the ground to finally overcome the barriers that seen from the ground seem high andseen from the sky look flat.

Don’t be mistaken, however, that it is an easy conversion. In fact it is almost a fight. The imperfect human nature and idealization in which the artist tries to tend, often and willingly fight and the first gets the upper hand by deleting parts, or by shading or decomposingto bring up a figure that is as melting, just like the wings wax of Icarus. In these cases, the background takes over and eats the figurefrom within, biting it and causing the crash risk. A fragility that goes well with the lightness of the figures, the neutrality of which are painted with delicate colors, soft and subtle, almost invisible with the stroke and synthesis directly and immediately makes the viewer focus immediately on the symbol. And the birds, already so rich in symbolic meaning, take on a more poetic tone when in the paintings of Diana Kirova seem in flight test after or during a period of weakness so excessive as to almost be defined disease. This disease is nothing if not the very humanity of the artist, identifying herself with the birds still can not get rid of. This corrodes the dreams of a total and pure spirituality and returns with a firm obstinacy to the weight of the earth. The war to overcome its human and physical boundaries, for the moment remains pervasive and continues to be part of the course of human history.
