Galerie spécialisée dans les artistes japonais d’après-guerre

Fondée en 2022 par Marc David Fitoussi, notre galerie-marchande Atari Arts est ultra spécialisée dans les artistes japonais d'après-guerre (principalement les années 1955 à 1975). Cette entreprise artistique novatrice est née d’une passion grandissante pour les arts (peintures et sculptures) des diverses avant-gardes japonaises de l'après-guerre.

Très tôt dans son parcours, M. Fitoussi s'intéresse à des peintres japonais rattachés historiquement à la France, tels que: Akira Tanaka (où il agit aujourd'hui en tant qu'expert attitré de la Fondation de l'artiste et de la maison de ventes Aguttes) ou encore Chuta Kimura (dont son père était déjà collectionneur dans les années 1960-1970). Fort d'une expérience de près de 20 ans en tant que collectionneur-mécène puis marchand d'art, M. Fitoussi s'aventure fréquemment au Japon depuis 2009 à la recherche de « trésors inédits » pour finalement réussir à obtenir entre 2015 et 2018 (en partenariat avec la galerie Artisyou, Paris VIème) un mandat d'agent exclusif en Europe (y compris en France) avec la très emblématique et réputée Whitestone Gallery (qui détient de nombreuses galeries en Asie - Tokyo, Hong-Kong, Taipei, Singapour, Pékin, Séoul - et un musée privée à Karuizawa) dans le but de promouvoir des artistes japonais de premier plan des mouvements Gutaï et Informel (ex. Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsuyoshi Maekawa, ou encore Toshimitsu Imaï).

Notre galerie s’est donc donnée pour mission de promouvoir cet art d'après-guerre trop souvent tombé dans l’oubli et ce malgré son importance historique incontestable. Pour ce faire, M. Fitoussi reçoit généralement en privé sur Paris (XVIème) mais tend par ailleurs à organiser chaque année des projets d'exposition avec des galeries partenaires et/ou dans des foires d'art françaises et internationales.

L'esprit-moteur de notre entreprise, jusqu'à même vouloir en porter le nom, tourne autour du mot « Atari » qui signifie en japonais « bluff ». En effet, autour de l'année 1955, le maitre fondateur de Gutaï - Jiro Yoshihara - parlait fréquemment avec l'artiste et co-fondateur du mouvement - Shozo Shimamoto - d'un « art bluffant ». L'idée était en fait de permettre aux futurs artistes Gutaï de penser hors du cadre artistique auto-imposé: « L'esprit Atari permet en fait à une personne d'apparaître plus capable ou plus puissante qu'elle ne l'est réellement ». Le résultat in fine pour Gutaï a été de générer un art singulièrement novateur et révolutionnaire. Pour Atari Arts, il s'agira plus modestement de promouvoir un « art historique bluffant » susceptible de vous couper le souffle de par sa force et son originalité.

Gallery specialized in postwar japanese artists

Founded in 2022 by Marc David Fitoussi, our merchant-gallery Atari Arts is ultra-specialized in post-war Japanese artists (mainly from 1955 to 1975). This innovative artistic enterprise was born out of a growing passion for the arts (paintings and sculptures) of the various post-war Japanese avant-gardes.

Very early on in his career, Mr. Fitoussi became interested in Japanese artists historically attached to France, such as: Akira Tanaka (where he now acts as the appointed expert of the artist's foundation and the auction house Aguttes) or Chuta Kimura (of which his father was already a collector in the 1960s-1970s). With nearly 20 years of experience as a collector-sponsor then as an art dealer, Mr. Fitoussi frequently ventures to Japan since 2009 in search of « unseen treasures » to finally succeed in obtaining between 2015 and 2018 (in partnership with Artisyou Gallery, Paris 6th) a mandate as an exclusive agent in Europe (including in France) from the very emblematic and renowned Whitestone Gallery (which holds numerous galleries in Asia - Tokyo, Hong-Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Beijing, Seoul - and a private museum in Karuizawa) with the aim of promoting leading Japanese artists of the Gutaï and Informal movements (e.g. Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsuyoshi Maekawa, or Toshimitsu Imaï).

Our gallery has therefore given itself the mission to promote this post-war art, too often overlooked despite its indisputable historical importance. To do so, Mr. Fitoussi usually receives visitors privately in Paris (16th) but also tends to organize exhibition projects every year with partnering galleries and/or in French and international art fairs.

The driving spirit of our enterprise, by even wanting to bear the name, lies behind the word « Atari » which means « bluff » in Japanese. Indeed, around 1955, the leader and founder of Gutaï - Jiro Yoshihara - frequently spoke with the artist and co-founder of the movement - Shozo Shimamoto - about a « bluffing art ». The idea was in fact to allow future Gutaï artists to think outside the self-imposed artistic frame: « The Atari spirit allows in fact a person to appear more capable or more powerful than he or she really is ». The ultimate result for Gutaï was to generate a singularly innovative and revolutionary art. For Atari Arts, it will be a more modest attempt to promote a « bluffing historical art » likely to take your breath away with its strength and originality.
