The presented lithograph on Arches wove paper was executed in 1925-26. (there were also 15 impressions on Japan paper and five on China paper).
Signed and numbered 78/130 in pencil by H.Matisse.
The presented lithograph comes from the portfolio "Ten Dancers". The series consisted of ten black-and-white works (four vertical and six horizontal) - sketches of ballerinas in a behind-the-scenes environment.
The world of Matisse is a world of dance, music and musical instruments. His style is distinguished by the flexibility of lines that convey a variety of silhouettes and outlines. Striving to contrast the life of the twentieth century with it’s turbulent tension, he recreates its festive side — the world of endless dance, the serene peace of idyllic scenes. Matisse's goal is to draw the viewer into this atmosphere of ideal images and dreams, to give him a sense of peace.
