Artwork description

This book combines Isaac Bashevis Singer's novel with the illustrations of artist Larry Rivers. Singer, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1978, first published this novel in English in 1960. The novel tells the story of Yasha Mazur, a 19th century Polish escape artist and performer whose personal problems trigger a spiritual crisis. Depicting the transformation that Yasha experiences, Rivers' illustrations consist of three color lithographs, hors texte, one of which is printed as a foldout sheet. The text also includes an author's note.

This book is number 1459 out of 1500 and is signed by Larry Rivers and Isaac Bashevis Singer in ink at the colophon. The errata card for the colophon is included.
