“La pittura di Paul Winstanley non mira tanto a rappresentare qualcosa quanto a distillare l’idea della cosa rappresentata, a mettere in luce la sua più intima essenza, a incarnare la sua astratta potenzialità di definirsi come immagine irrelata, a sé stante, il suo situarsi lungo l’interfaccia di picture e di painting. E, rispetto alla fotografia che ne costituisce il punto di partenza, quello che questa pittura cerca di rendere visibile è proprio l’invisibile della fotografia. Questo senza perdere la sua consistenza, la sua articolazione luministica e cromatica, la sua impalpabile tattilità: è proprio attraverso queste qualità che la pittura ci apre una prospettiva inedita e ci introduce al suo personale discorso, articolato su più livelli. È come se la tattilità impregnasse la nostra stessa visione, vaporizzandosi nel fruscio dello sguardo, come se il nostro stesso sguardo scoprisse in sé una consistenza meteorologica, una specie di grana."

Paul Winstanley è nato a Manchester nel giugno del 1954. Ha studiato pittura al Cardiff College of Art dal 1973 al 1976 e alla Slade School of Fine Art di Londra dal 1976 al 1978.

Educato secondo i canoni del Modernismo astratto, durante il decennio successivo al college Winstanley si è impegnato nella ricerca di un nuovo linguaggio visivo, combinando i motivi del minimalismo con il pittoricismo della fotografia.

Il suo dipinto Walkway, esposto a Whitechapel Open nel 1989, gli valse il primo premio all’Unilever Award.

Del 1993 è la mostra Driven Landscapes al Camden Arts Center.

Nel 1997-1998 espone alla Tate Millbank con la mostra Annexe.

Nel 2008 si è tenuta una grande retrospettiva del suo lavoro all’Art Space di Auckland in Nuova Zelanda.

Nel 2013 pubblica per Ridinghouse il suo progetto fotografico Art School.

Nell 2018, pubblicato da Art/Books, esce il suo libro intitolato 59 Paintings, in cui, attraverso l’esame delle sue singole opere, affronta gli aspetti sia pratici che teorici del suo modo d’intendere la pittura.

Ha esposto con regolarità a Los Angeles, New York, Dublino, Londra, Parigi e Amburgo.

Le sue opere sono presenti nelle collezioni della Tate di Londra, del MoMA di New York, del MoCA di Los Angeles, dell’IMMA di Dublino, della British Library, della New York City Public Library, della Southampton City Art Gallery, dell’ACGB, del British Council.

Paul Winstanley vive e lavora a Londra.

“Paul Winstanley’s painting does not so much aim to represent something as to distil the idea of the subject represented, to bring out its innermost essence, to embody its abstract potential to define itself as an unrelated image, in its own right, its location along the picture and painting interface. And, with respect to the photograph that constitutes its origin, what this painting seeks to make visible is precisely what remains invisible in photography. This without losing its texture, its luminist and chromatic articulation, and its impalpable tactility: it is precisely through these qualities that painting reveals a new perspective and introduces us to its personal discourse, articulated on several levels. It is as if tactility impregnates our very vision, vaporising in the rustle of the gaze, as if our own gaze discovered within itself a meteorological consistency, a kind of grain.”

Paul Winstanley was born in Manchester in June 1954. He studied painting at Cardiff College of Art from 1973-76 and at Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1976-78.

Schooled in the orthodoxies of abstract Modernism, Winstanley spent a decade after college establishing a new visual language, combining the tenets of minimalism with the pictorialism of photography.

His breakthrough showing of the large painting ‘Walkway’ at the Whitechapel Open in 1989 won him the first prize Unilever Award.

His 'Driven Landscapes' exhibition at the Camden Arts Center dates back to 1993.

In 1997-1998 his exhibition ‘Annexe' took place at the Tate Millbank.

In 2008 a major retrospective of his work was held at the Art Space in Auckland, New Zealand.

In 2013 his photographic project 'Art School' was published by Ridinghouse.

In 2018 he produced his new book ‘59 Paintings’, in which the artist considers the process of thinking about and making work.

Winstanley has shown regularly in Los Angeles, New York, Dublin, London, Paris and Hamburg.

He has work in the collections of Tate (London), MoMA (New York), MoCA (Los Angeles), IMMA (Dublin), The British Library, The New York City Public Library, Southampton City Art Gallery, ACGB, British Council.

He lives and works in London.
