Market of drawings [21 Feb 2005]

In March, Paris will become the focal point of the drawings market. The “Salon du Dessin” will be held, as in previous years, at the Palais de la Bourse. From 16-21 March 2005, thirty galleries (14 French and 16 international) will exhibit a selection of high-quality drawings dating from the 16th-20th century.

Helmut Newton (1920-2004) [31 Jan 2005]

Helmut Newton died exactly a year ago at the wheel of his Cadillac at the age of 83. A highly talented fashion photographer, Newton is best known for his black and white photographs of tall and slender women and for his celebrity portraits. Shortly before his death, the artist bequeathed more than a thousand of his most emblematic photos to Berlin, the city where he was born. Contemporary art: an increasingly speculative segment [17 Jan 2005]

Between 2003 and 2004, total revenue from fine art auctions worldwide rose 37% to close to USD 3.5 billion. With a number of major sales in the modern art segment, 2004 was above all a very successful year for contemporary art which doubled its revenue of the previous year. According to Artprice’s econometric data, prices on the contemporary art segment rose 17% over the twelve months of 2004 with the segment accounting for 6.4% of total art revenue compared to 4.4% the previous year.

Sotheby’s and Christie’s auction sales preview [09 Jan 2005]

Sotheby’s dominates the 2004 art market [02 Jan 2005]

The art market had a splendid year in 2004. Turnover at fine art auctions jumped by more than 30% on 2003, wiping out at a stroke the lingering effects of the 2001 slump. Much of this growth was due to high-profile auctions hosted by Sotheby’s and Christie’s.

Art market prices heading for record highs in November 2005 [16 Dec 2004]

Art prices are now at their highest levels since the speculative bubble burst back in 1990. The Artprice Global Index calculated using data on repeat sales reveals that following the fall auction season in New York, art prices rose by 24.4% between January and December 2004. Taking into account fluctuations in exchange rates, the increase in euro terms was just 14% over the same period.

Following the latest New York sales, the Artprice Global Index of fine art, which uses repeated sales method, is up 18.2% on the year-ago period. USD 100 invested in an artwork ten years ago would now be worth an average of USD 153.Many art collectors are generating even higher returns through judicious deals at auction, making the most of the market’s current enthusiasm. Art Auction: Damien HIRST at Sotheby’s [08 Oct 2004]

On 18 October 2004, Sotheby’s London is to auction the contents of the “Pharmacy” restaurant, which houses the largest collection of Damien HIRST’s artworks. Everything in the Notting Hill-based restaurant from the walls and paintings to the crockery was designed by the most famous of the Young British Artists. Among the most noteworthy are 11 “Medicine Cabinets” and 10 “Butterfly Paintings”.Offering almost 140 lots with estimates of between GBP50 and GBP300,000, this auction, which overlaps with the Frieze Art Fair, is expected to fetch in excess of GBP 3 million.
